University of California, San Francisco studied respiratory health in a sample of San Francisco bartenders in December 1997, before a smokefree bar measure went into effect, and again in February 1998, some six weeks after it was in force.
Results:
  • Secondhand smoke exposure fell over 90%.
  • Respiratory complaints dropped almost 60%.
  • Reports of sensory irritation dropped almost 80%.
  • Lung function test results immediately began to improve.

How do smoke free measures affect air quality? Researchers conducted tests before and after a new smokefree measure went into effect in Delaware in the winter of 2002 - 3. The sampled a casino, five restaraunts with bars, a stand alone bar and a pool hall.

Result? After the smokefree measure went into force, as the charts show, workers and patrons were exposed to 95% less carcinogens and 90% less fine particle pollutants that lodge in the lungs and also cause irregular heart beats and heart disease.
